I received a comment from a reader, who asked whether women should wear sleeveless top for work or not. The dilemma is, when they do, some of them wear tops with their old bra straps showing. I can also imagine that with some sleeveless tops, certain body parts are easily revealed. This creates an unprofessional image for a business. An exception of course, is Hooters, who uses sexuality to sell food.
Depending on the type of business, different levels of "coverage" is required. In general, the more skin shows, the less professional the image is. If a person works at a beach, it is fine to wear something with less coverage. But in an office environment, sleeveless tops worn inside a thin (but not see through) cotton cardigan, or a short sleeve jacket, work fine. A rule needs to be put in - the top must be at least 3 inches above the cleavage for conservative business, and at least 2 inches above the cleave for business casual environments. No bra straps showing, and nothing spilling out of the sleeveless top.
The reader has written that some vocal employees complained that it was too hot to wear sleeves. The reader did not say whether the men in the company, who wear sleeved tops, complained or not - so I'm assuming that they did not complain about temperature and sleeved tops. Keep in mind that in the Middle East, where temperatures can reach 50 degrees celcius, people wear long sleeve tops and bottoms. So, vocal ones in the company are expressing their opinions not because of the climate issue, but indirectly vocalizing their need for personal freedom - they are likely to feel that their freedom to wear what they please is being taken away. For those employees who are unwilling, they can find a workplace where they can wear bikinis all the time. It seems obvious that they care more about their personal freedom than serving customers with the right attitude, which includes image.
