"What Would I Wear if I Were Totally Free?"

The question was posted by a reader. Interesting. Something that I haven't thought about in the past in a serious way, because people have been conditioned by all the should's and shoudn'ts in the world about clothing, hence total freedom is almost unimaginable.

Before I answer the question, I have to define what I mean by totally free -

1. free from all judgments, including my own
2. free from financial obligations, so I can spend a dollar or a million dollars on clothing. Or, let's imagine - what if clothing is free for all in the world? The I don't have to talk about money here
3. free from fitting in anywhere - which means everyone is accepted by all, even if they walk on the street naked

I think 3 qualifiers are enough.

If I were totally free, given the limited imagination I have at the moment, I would wear loose sweatshirts and sweatpants, and fuzzy slippers (even if I go out). Or possibily a bathrobe. If I'm free from the above 3 points, the only thing I'd care about is comfort. I'd probaby shave all my hair off, and my cabinets will not have any make up or hair brushes. The sweatpants, sweatshirts and fuzzy slippers would have to be great in quality and in design. Even by myself I like good designs that reflects beauty and harmony.

The above description really isn't crazy enough. But that is the extent of putting together what I know and have seen.

Oh, if I were to cook, I'd wear clothing made of fire proof material (maybe a firefighter's suit), along with goggles and a helmet (yes, I don't like cooking). Just so that boiling liquids like oil and water won't be spat at my skin directly from the stove.

I would love to know what you would wear, if you were totally free.

Hi Noelle, you show what a lark it really is to be FREE!! I notice the first thing you wanted was comfort and secondly, less work.

If I were totaly free I would love to wear a sorong from FIGI since the colors are so very beautiful and the designs unique. I would love to have that over a lovely bathing suit so I could walk from a cabana to the ocean. Now that is my sense of real freedom!

I wonder if we'll get some other fun responses. Thanks for this really great post!!

Noelle, that is a terrific post and thanks Robyn too... thanks for the question that generated freedom and fun! Let's see...if I had total freedom and I was in the Arctic ...as I was for two years... I'd wear many, many toasty layers.

But here in New York I'd like to wear fun long swishy skirts because they always make me feel like a party or lunch with friends could be just over the horizon -- even when it seems so busy at work... my swishy skirt would have me ready...
