I'm not talking about how expensive your outfit or hairdo is.
In the networking events I've been, I have seen that many participants had the message "I need more money" in their minds, which turned them into networking junkies, with an air of desperation for business. Many organizations take advantage of that, by encouraging the behavior by putting out networking events that reinforce such behavior. They charge an arm and a leg for it too, making participants think they will get something from paying all that money. This is why I don't usually attend networking events now (unless I'm specifically invited), because forced networking just doesn't work for me.
What's worse is that some organizations further take advantage of this desperation from people, and "teach" them how to get more money by networking more effectively - namely how to turn listeners to prospects to customers. There is an organization that charges almost $1000 for such a course (and can you believe it's a certification course?!) - how to network. I know a person who has taken the course and believe me, what she learned hasn't been impressive.
Here's an interesting quote from Byron Katie (author of Loving What Is):
"Money is not your business, truth is your business. The story 'I need more money' is what keeps you from realizing your wealth. Whenever you think that your needs are not being met, you're telling the story of a future. You're supposed to have exactly as much money as you have right now. This is not a theory: this is reality. How much money do you have? That's it, you're supposed to have exactly that amount. If you don't believe it, look at your checkbook. How do you know when you're supposed to have more? When you do. How do you know when you're supposed to have less? When you do. This is true abundance. It leaves you without a care in the world."
A person may present an excellent first impression through dressing and grooming. But a person's true intention will reveal sooner or later by his/her communication. If a person is desperate, people know it, and the person becomes a magnet that repels everyone.
For me, it's good to keep in mind about the natural laws of vibration. All of us are made of energies. Like attracts like. For those who need my services come to me without difficulty. For those who do not need it, I can sell them as much as I want, with promos and gimmicks, and they will not like it. This is the way it is with all aspects of my life.

Great quote from Byron Katie on money there - thanks for sharing it. Coming back to reality can make a big difference.
In case you'd like to listen, there's an audio where Katie's doing The Work on money with someone here:
